One of my besties and I were talking the other day about the idea of things being hard versus things being hard work and it was a rather enlightening conversation. While I felt enlightened and I imagine she did also, I had this notion that this was information that the masses needed to be swiftly bitch slapped with, because perspective is everything and in this day and age, the collective consciousness lacks the common sense God gave us. Yep! I just looped you into that one along with myself. We are all walking this human experience and not a goddamn one of us is better than any other. We are all one. Oneness is a longer story than I care to get into right now so you'll have to explore that one on your own, if you're curious. Anyhow.
I have a few great examples of things being hard or difficult versus things that are hard work to show you, but first I'd like to offer my personal explanation on the difference between the two. If something is hard, we think of adjectives like heavy, demanding, painful, treterous, harsh, or grueling. Pretty much any awful negative word that you can think of. Now on the other hand, many people view hard work as being of positive value. So some of the words or synonyms to describe hard work tend to be more positive. Words like, diligence, conscientious, perseverance, determination, enthusiastic or studious. You can feel the difference in your body if you read the words I've listed for each out loud. Go ahead, if you're feeling bold. Read the words outloud and notice the sensations in your body.
Did you feel a lightness or a heaviness? Which words made you feel light and which made you feel heavy? Pay attention to what areas of your body felt light or heavy. Your head? Your chest? Your gut and stomach? Or perhaps lower, down into your root chakra? Breathe through that all and release it. Deep breath in...... And release it. Good!
Now I'd like to list some examples I saw on social media. This particular post listed all the examples as simply hard. But I chose to add 'work' to the end of some of them. This is perspective and perspective is an incredibly personal concept. Some will agree, some will not and that's ok. In my opinion and from my personal standpoint, hard work always comes from an intentional space of inspired action. That shows up differently for us all, though.
It was said that these statements were from a book, but I was not able to find the book when cross-referencing the quote. It simply seems as though it's just a viral quote someone pulled out of their ass and it has apparently intrigued many, including me! Readers, please comment if you know of the book it's from (if it is from a book) and I'll add it. Here we go. The parenthesis are where I added the word 'work'.
"Marriage is hard (work).
Divorce is hard.
Choose your hard.
Obesity is hard.
Being fit is hard (work).
Choose your hard.
Being in debt is hard.
Being financially disciplined is hard (work).
Choose your hard.
Starting a business is hard (work).
Working a 9 to 5 is hard.
Choose your hard.
Life will never be easy, but you can choose your hard."
Essentially how I see it is, choose to work hard and thrive or choose to live a hard life, which ,often times leads to suffering,. Things like the business versus the 9 to 5 are objective. Some people would prefer a 9 to 5 job over the stress of running their own business. That's a personal preference and neither are detrimental in anyway depending on what you believe and want out of life.
Marriage versus divorce is objective. Sometimes marriages don't work out because they weren't supposed to. And for some people, getting divorced was the best thing they did for themselves. We all live our lives to the best of our ability with the hands we've been dealt.
Obesity versus fit is also objective because each person's 'fit' looks difference. To me, it's about taking action or sitting stagnant in a space of inaction, not looks.
And debt versus financial discipline makes sense. Saving and doing good things with your money is absolutely hard work and a deliberate choice. Being in debt sucks, plain and simple.
At the end of the day, do what's best for you and what makes sense to you. I just wanted to make a few interesting points and I hope you enjoyed my shenanigans in the process.
